Janelle Brown Admits Her 30-Year Marriage to Kody Was “a Burden”: “It Was So Much Work”

Janelle Brown Sister Wives Season 21 confessional

Janelle Brown just said the quiet part out loud. On Sunday’s episode of Sister Wives Season 21, the 57-year-old admitted that staying married to Kody Brown for nearly three decades had become “a burden” — and that she and Kody “never really had a solid identity as a couple.”

It was the bluntest thing Janelle has ever said about her 30-year spiritual marriage, and according to reports, it came during an emotional session with a relationship counselor as she tries to figure out what dating looks like after Kody.

What Janelle Actually Said

Sitting down to talk about her future love life, Janelle looked back at her past one — and didn’t sugarcoat it. “I don’t think Kody and I ever really had a solid identity as a couple,” she said. “He and I were always very much thinking about the family. We thought about the whole.”

She confessed that she never spent enough time thinking about their relationship one-on-one. “It was just sort of a given. It was just going to happen. It was just going to be there,” she recalled. “I realize now that maybe we should have probably taken some time for that. But ultimately at the end, I just sort of became apathetic. Like, I just didn’t care.”

And then the line that stopped viewers cold: staying married, she said, “was a burden” — “so much work” she no longer wants in her life.

When It Broke: “He Started Getting Hard on My Kids”

Janelle also pointed to the moment she knew she couldn’t keep going. “I think the biggest thing for me started when [Kody] really started to be hard on my children,” she said. “Wanting them to conform to his opinion, wanting them to act a certain way. That’s when all of a sudden I’m like, ‘OK, I don’t know if I can do this anymore.'”

Fans will remember those fractures played out on screen: the pandemic-era rules, the estrangement from sons Gabriel and the late Garrison, and Kody’s decision to side with Robyn and her children. Janelle and Kody split in December 2022, just shy of their 30th anniversary. Christine had left in 2021, Meri announced her split in 2023 — and Kody and Robyn are not filming Season 21 at all.

The New Rules: What Janelle Wants Now

So what is Janelle looking for in a future partner? Companionship — on her terms. During the counselor session, she admitted she’s “very old-fashioned, very conservative” when it comes to physical intimacy: “There would have to be commitment.” She even balked at the idea of approaching a man at church.

“The relationship that I had was so much work, and I just don’t want that anymore,” she explained. It’s a far cry from the woman who once said she was happy on her own — and fans know she’s already dating a man named Pete, whom she has described as “wonderful.”

Fans Are Split: Honest — or Rewriting History?

As expected, the fandom is divided. Team Janelle calls it the most honest confession of the season — a woman finally admitting what viewers have said for years: that Kody’s favoritism toward Robyn made the other marriages unlivable.

But critics aren’t buying the timing. Some fans speculate Janelle is softening her own role in the story now that she’s the beloved fan favorite, arguing she stayed as long as the checks came. Others push back: she raised six kids in plural marriage for 30 years and walked away with her dignity — what’s revisionist about that?

One thing both sides agree on: nobody wants more flashbacks. With Kody and Robyn officially gone from filming, viewers are begging TLC to let the OG3’s fresh starts — Janelle’s dating life included — take center stage.

So what do you think — was Janelle brave for calling her marriage “a burden,” or is she rewriting 30 years of history? Sound off below.
