“When Your Mom Becomes Your Wingman… and Also Kills the Vibe”

🚩 Awkward or Adorable? I Love a Mama’s Boy Returns With Matt, Kelly, and… Third-Wheeling at Speed Dating?
What’s a bigger red flag: a guy who’s not close to his mom — or a guy so close that she literally crashes his speed date?
TLC’s I Love a Mama’s Boy is back, and so are fan favorites Matt and his mother/roommate/boundary-ignoring bestie, Kelly McAdams. If you thought last season was wild, buckle up — because the smothering is hitting new heights.
In an exclusive clip shared ahead of the Sept. 30 episode titled “The Prince Has Arrived,” fans w atched what may be the most cringeworthy speed dating moment in TLC history.
Matt, still single and looking for love (with Mom’s full supervision), is seen chatting with a woman named Shanel. Things seem to be going well… until Kelly struts onto the scene with a drink in hand, greets them both like she’s the hostess of the night, and compliments Shanel’s manicure. 🤦♂️
Cue Matt’s face going straight into his palm.
When Shanel — rightfully confused — asks if the two came to the event together, Kelly responds with a now-iconic line:
👉 “We have a close relationship.”
That’s one way to put it.
Though she walked away (kind of), Kelly parked herself just a few feet away, watching the rest of the date like a rom-com director… or an overinvolved chaperone. Eventually, a host stepped in and whisked Shanel off to her next mini-date.
Shanel later admitted in a confessional, “It’s a little weird.” (Understatement of the century.)
She added, “Matt’s a cool guy, but his mom popping up like that changed the direction — it messed with his energy.” Still, she seemed intrigued: “I’m curious how it would be if his mom didn’t pop up like that… we had chemistry.”
So — will Matt ever get a shot at real romance? Or will Kelly continue to screen every potential daughter-in-law like she’s casting for The Bachelor: Mom’s Edition?
One thing’s for sure: this season, Kelly isn’t just along for the ride. She’s in the driver’s seat — and possibly holding the emergency brake.
