Whitney Thore Slammed as ‘Tone-Deaf’ After Promoting Writing Course Fans Say She Never Took

Whitney Thore

Whitney Way Thore has survived a broken engagement, a decade of body-shamers, and just about every rumor the internet could throw at her — but this week, it was a writing course that set her comments on fire.

The My Big Fat Fabulous Life star is facing a wave of backlash after promoting an online writing course on Instagram, with critics calling the ad “tone-deaf” and accusing the TLC star of flaunting a lifestyle her audience could never afford. And the fiercest criticism isn’t about the course itself — it’s about the fact that, according to fans, she never actually took it.

The Ad That Started It All

In the sponsored video, Whitney told followers the course came with a free consultation and framed it as a perfect fit for her life. She reminded viewers that she has “a career,” noting she films My Big Fat Fabulous Life for “part of the year” and travels constantly. Her pitch: while she’s traveling, she can work remotely — so studying a writing course from anywhere in the world simply suited her.

It sounded harmless enough. The internet disagreed.

Fans Spot the Disconnect

The backlash exploded on Reddit, where one fan’s rant set the tone: “She doesn’t take courses, she doesn’t work, she doesn’t plan to work, she wouldn’t dream of working.” The post argued there’s a glaring gap between Whitney’s reality and her audience’s reality.

“You’re telling your audience who I assume are looking to better their lives that you are SO PRIVILEGED that you can take classes while on one of your many vacations,” the original poster wrote — before landing the hardest punch: “Essentially she’s telling her audience, do you wanna live and travel like me? Do this thing that I absolutely did not do.”

The sharpest observation echoed through the comments: Whitney never actually said she completed the course herself. “There’s nothing about the courses that made her travel possible,” one commenter wrote. Another added a gut-punch of perspective: “Personally I have not been overseas in 40 years due to the cost… Whitney is so privileged and flaunts it.”

Not Everyone Is Piling On

To be fair, sponsored posts are standard income for reality stars — and promoting a writing course is far milder than the weight-loss teas and crypto schemes other influencers push. Whitney has also worked on television for more than a decade; filming a reality show, touring dance classes, and building a brand is work, even if it doesn’t look like a 9-to-5.

Some defenders would argue the anger says more about the audience’s frustration than about Whitney herself. But even they would have to admit the optics are rough: telling fans to invest in self-improvement while casually brushing your hair and talking about your many vacations is, at minimum, a marketing misfire.

The Relatability Problem That Won’t Go Away

This isn’t really about one ad. Whitney became famous as the relatable woman behind “A Fat Girl Dancing” — the everywoman who turned body-shaming into a movement. More than a decade later, her life looks nothing like the audience that rooted for her: international travel, a red-carpet fiancé, and a TV career most people would trade their rent for.

That gap is exactly why this story stings. Fans didn’t fall in love with Whitney because she was aspirational — they loved her because she was them. Every time she looks less like them, a piece of that bond cracks a little more.

As of this writing, Whitney hasn’t publicly addressed the backlash. But with Season 14 filming underway and a wedding on the horizon, she may not be able to dodge the conversation for long.

So which side are you on — is Whitney genuinely out of touch with the fans who made her famous, or are critics just mad she’s living the life she worked a decade to build? Sound off in the comments.
