Manuel Uribe, the heaviest man in the world at the time, had to be transported to his wedding venue by a large truck that could carry his bed on wheels. In January 2006, Manuel, who hailed from Monterrey, Mexico, was awarded the Guinness World Record for being the heaviest man on the planet, weighing in at 560kg. Despite his struggles with obesity, Manuel fell in love and got married in 2008, marking a rare moment when he left his house in a decade. However, his battle with obesity continued, and he passed away in 2014 at the age of 48.
Manuel Uribe’s weight gain began in his adulthood, after he started working as a computer engineer in the United States, sitting in front of a computer and rarely engaging in physical activity. By the summer of 2002, he had become bedridden, relying on his mother and friends for daily activities like eating and bathing.
In 2006, Manuel’s weight peaked at 560kg, and he became the heaviest man in the world at the time. He appeared on television, seeking help for his health condition, which led to the Guinness World Record recognition.
However, after the media attention, Manuel received medical aid, which helped him start losing weight. By 2007, he had lost over 179kg and weighed 381kg. Nonetheless, he was still considered morbidly obese and unable to get out of bed.
In 2008, Manuel tied the knot with Claudia Solis in a happy ceremony that marked a rare occasion when he left his house in a decade. However, getting him to the wedding venue was a challenge as his family had to rent a large truck to carry his bed on wheels.
Manuel attributed his obesity to his sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise. He worked as a computer technician, repairing typewriters, electronic calculators, and computers, leading a life with little physical activity. He blamed his weight gain on his love for Mexican cuisine, including beans, rice, bread, corn, french fries, and pizza.
Research has shown that people suffering from obesity tend to engage in less physical activity. A 2009 study by the Clinical Cardiology Department found that obese people only walked an average of 2,500 steps per day, significantly less than the 10,000 steps healthy individuals take daily.
Despite his efforts to lose weight, Manuel’s condition worsened, and his weight increased to 416kg in December 2009 and 444.6kg in March 2012. His wife even suggested divorce due to his inability to lose weight.
On May 2, 2014, Manuel was rushed to the hospital for an irregular heartbeat, and emergency staff had to use a crane to lift him onto a truck. At the hospital, he was given a spacious room for treatment, but unfortunately, he passed away due to complications arising from his obesity.
Manuel Uribe’s life was marked by his struggle with obesity, which caused him to be bedridden for over a decade. Nonetheless, he found love and happiness in his life, getting married to Claudia Solis in a touching wedding ceremony. His story highlights the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle in maintaining good health. Though his life was cut short, his legacy continues to inspire others to take control of their health and lead fulfilling lives.
