There are many special parts of taking on the role of being a bridesmaid, from showering your friend with pre-wedding celebrations to being there for them on their big day. But one of the most anticipated parts of being a bridesmaid is learning more about what the person getting married has in mind for the bridesmaid dress they’d like you to wear.
While some people pick out a singular dress for their bridesmaids, others keep it flexible and ask their friends to pick a style that fits their personality, but follows a specific color or fabric preference.

A MAUVE DRESS I PICKED OUT
For bridesmaid Madison Tong, hearing that the bride wanted her to pick out her own bridesmaid dress was music to her ears.
“The bride had the color she wanted picked out, but she allowed us to pick the style as well as the fabric of our dress because she wanted us to be comfortable and confident in what we were wearing,” says Tong. “Even though the bride picked the color of the dress, the color was amazing, it was a mauve color; perfect for a spring wedding. In previous weddings, the bride didn’t let us pick what we wanted to wear, which was fine because it is their wedding, but I really loved how the bride let us be a part of picking the dress and making sure we feel comfortable and confident.”

A $20 MAXI DRESS
When bridesmaid Michelle Madison heard she could pick the style and color dress, she decided to go for a certain look and found a dress for just $20.
“The best bridesmaid dress I ever wore was an aqua multiway maxi dress for a destination beach wedding in the Dominican Republic,” says Madison. “The bride allowed us to choose the style and color dress we wanted and we all decided on the multiway maxi because it compliments all body types and gives creative control for each of us to look unique!”

A FLORAL STAND-OUT PICK
The only rule the bride gave Katy Putzker and the rest of her bridesmaids was to pick a dress in a natural color. That’s when Katy set out to find a look that fit her style and found a light pink dress with flowers on it.
“It was my favorite dress because I got to pick it and I felt great in it,” says Putzker. “The only constraint I was given was that it needed to be in the natural color family. When I found the dress, I sent a picture to my friend to make sure it was okay and it ended up being perfect.”

THE PERFECT FIT
For Christina Raglad, there’s only one bridesmaid dress that stands out in her mind as her favorite one because of how it made her feel on her friend’s big day.
“My favorite dress was my favorite because it fit me perfectly and showed off my figure in all the right ways,” says Raglad. “I’ve seriously never taken so many pictures and never felt so gorgeous in a bridesmaid dress before.”

IT WAS A MUTUAL PICK
Ashley Rose was excited to wear a specific dress because it was one that her and the bride picked out together.
“It was my favorite dress to wear because I was maid of honor for my best friend of 7+ years and I got to pick the dress out with her,” says Rose. “She really let my opinion and hers work together; we fell in love with the same dress.”

A SIMPLE BLACK DRESS
Courtney Crump felt like she had options when the bride told her to pick out a black bridesmaid dress. Ultimately, she found a dress she loved and felt great wearing.
“I was able to find a beautiful 3/4 length sleeve super warm dress for her January wedding,” says Crump. “It’s vintage-inspired and I actually did get to wear it again — six times!”

ONE DRESS, MANY STYLES
Ashleigh Benson found herself the most excited about wearing a bridesmaid dress that allowed each person to style it in any way that they wanted.
“My favorite dress was one of those wrap dresses where you can pretty much do whatever you want with the strap,” says Benson. “It’s so friendly for most body types.”
