Whitney Thore Had 5 Jobs Before Season 14 — And Only One Made Her Famous

Before Whitney Way Thore was a TLC star, she was a theater kid from Greensboro, an English teacher in South Korea, and the producer behind a morning radio show. With Season 14 premiering Tuesday, November 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on TLC, and Whitney back home in Charlotte, North Carolina, it is the perfect moment to look at the jobs that made her — and ask which one Season 14 should bring back.

Before the Cameras: Theater Kid, Teacher, Radio Producer

Whitney studied theater at Appalachian State University, and after graduation she moved to South Korea to teach English to schoolchildren — a chapter she has said shaped how she sees the world.

Back in the United States, she landed a job she rarely gets credit for: on-air producer of Jared & Katie in the Morning on Greensboro radio station 107.5 KZL. She was the person behind the scenes, booking guests and building segments, not the person in front of the microphone. That job matters, because it is where the whole story started.

The Video That Changed Everything

On February 27, 2014, the radio station posted a video of Whitney dancing called “A Fat Girl Dancing.” It went viral, eventually passing eight million views on YouTube, and suddenly the producer was the story. Appearances on ABC News, NBC’s Today Show, and The Huffington Post followed, and Whitney turned the attention into the No Body Shame campaign — a message that confidence does not come with a dress size.

Less than a year later, TLC came calling. My Big Fat Fabulous Life premiered on January 13, 2015, and television became her full-time job. Twelve years on, it still is — but it was never her only job.

The Business She Built: Books, Brand Deals, and NoBS Active

While the cameras rolled, Whitney built a brand. Her memoir, I Do It with the Lights On: And 10 More Discoveries on the Road to a Blissfully Shame-Free Life, arrived in May 2016. Speaking engagements and brand partnerships followed, and she poured her dance-and-fitness passion into NoBS Active, the workout platform she launched with trainer Ryan Andreas and later ran with trainer Jessica Powell.

NoBS Active was built on a simple idea: workouts for every body, at home, with no shame attached. As of 2023 reporting, subscriptions ran about $19.99 a month, with an app that launched in October 2021. Fans have debated the business for years, but there is no debate that she built something real outside television. Not every reality star does.

The Charlotte Reset: What Work Looks Like in Season 14

Here is what makes Season 14 interesting from a work standpoint. According to TLC’s own Season 14 announcement, Whitney is back in her home state, “rediscovering her confidence through dance.” Read that as a career reset: the dance teacher is coming back.

Longtime fans have said for years that they miss the dance-centered Whitney — the woman whose fame started with a dance video, not a confessional. A Charlotte homecoming puts her back on home turf, near the North Carolina roots where radio, theater, and dance all began. If Season 14 leans into dance classes or a NoBS revival, it will be the first time in years that Whitney’s work life, not just her personal life, drives the season.

That is the version of Whitney many fans fell for first: not a woman waiting for her life to happen, but a woman building it — one job at a time.

So, fandom, settle this one: if Season 14 could bring back only ONE of Whitney’s jobs, which would you pick — dance teacher, NoBS coach, author and speaker, or back behind the radio mic? Drop your pick in the comments, and tell us why.
