Before 14 Kids and the Divorce: The Detroit Night That Started the Derricos’ Love Story

Before there were 14 children, four sets of multiples, a TLC hit, a divorce, and a court case, there were just two strangers on a night out in Detroit. No cameras. No 15-passenger van. No matching D-names. Just Deon Derrico, Karen Carter, and a conversation neither of them walked away from.
A Night Out in Detroit, 2002
Deon and Karen have said they met in Detroit in 2002, while out with separate groups of friends. It was a nightclub, a conversation, and a connection.
According to reports, Karen was working as a flight attendant based in Detroit at the time, while Deon, a Detroit native, was already dreaming big about family. They began dating, and in 2005, they married. The biggest family on reality television did not start with a plan. It started with a night out.
“However Many God Will Give Me”
Early in their courtship, Deon asked Karen how many children she wanted. Her answer, which she has repeated in interviews, became the foundation of everything that followed: “However many God will give me.” Deon has said that was the moment he knew she was the one.
Karen has also spoken openly about miscarriages before their first child was born. Their eldest daughter, Darian, was born in December 2005, the same year they married. Five years later came their son Derrick, born in July 2010.

One Letter, 14 Times: The D-Named Multiples
Then the multiples began, and they did not stop. Twins Dallas and Denver arrived in October 2011. Quintuplets Deniko, Dariz, Deonee, Daician, and Daiten followed in September 2013. Twins Diez and Dior were born in May 2017 — originally triplets, their brother Carter died shortly after birth, a loss the family has carried quietly ever since. Triplets Dawsyn, De’Aren, and Dyver completed the family in July 2019.
Every one of the 14 children has a name starting with D. The couple have said all of the multiples were conceived naturally, without IVF.
From Detroit Dance Floor to TLC Fame
Doubling Down With the Derricos premiered in 2020 and ran for five seasons and roughly 49 episodes. Fans fell for the dance parties, the school runs, Deon’s famous routines, and GG holding court as the family’s beloved matriarch.
For most of its run, the show sold a simple promise: this family was grounded, funny, and fiercely together. The later seasons showed strain, and by June 2024 the marriage was over — filed on June 4 and finalized just two days later.

So Why Does the Love Story Still Hurt?
Here is the honest part: the love story did not get a fairy-tale ending. Deon and Karen are divorced co-parents, and Karen’s Nevada criminal case — she was arrested in June 2026, has pleaded not guilty, and is presumed innocent — remains open.
And yet the fandom cannot let go of 2002. One camp says the Detroit night proves what the family once was, and what it could still be. The other says the real love story was never the marriage at all — it is the 14 kids, GG, and a family that refuses to disappear, even now that Deon says new cameras are rolling for a season targeted at 2027.
Maybe both camps are right. A night out in Detroit gave the world 14 children, a grandmother icon, and one of the wildest family sagas reality TV has ever seen — and it started with two people, a dance floor, and one unforgettable answer.
So tell us honestly: do you still root for the Deon-and-Karen love story — or is the family itself, all 14 kids and GG included, the real love story now? Sound off in the comments.
